Lube oil, or lubricating oil, is the term used for hydrocarbon-based mineral oil used for lubricating gearboxes, industrial machinery, lawn and garden equipment, and engines. Lube oil becomes contaminated by several different means. Contamination can be in the form of water, dust, metal shavings, or a number of other foreign materials that find their way into the lubricating oil. Cleaning, or removing contaminates from the oil, while maintaining the oil's original properties, is accomplished by the use of filters. A kidney-loop system is commonly used to clean lube oil directly in the reservoir or maintain its cleanliness.
